Buying used mountain bikes can be a bit of an experience as you will need to know a little about bikes to make sure that the seller is not trying to cheat you by selling you a piece of junk. Before you head out and start looking at used mountain bikes you need to take look at how much they cost new. There is no deal when the price you pay for a used bike is the same or very close to that of a new bike. If you are going to pay that much for a used bike, you might as well buy the new one.

Once you have selected a used mountain bike that is in your price range you will need to take a good, hard look at it. The best way to do this is to make sure that it is clean first so that you can inspect it very closely. If the bike you are looking at is covered in dirt and grime ask the seller to clean it up before you look at it, if he refuses to, then move on to another bike. Dirt can hide many problems such as cracked frames or broken welds.

Mountain bikes are subject to some pretty hard use over the course of their life, it is not uncommon for welds to break so carefully inspect the frame and all of the welds for signs of damage or repairs. While repairs may not be cause for rejecting a used mountain bike it can be a good way to reduce the amount you are willing to offer for the bike.

Look carefully at the wheels to see if the mountain bike parts show signs of damage, since they are the one thing that hits the ground they have to absorb all of the impact of hard use. If they show any signs of damage it might be a clue as to how hard the bike has been ridden. Again this may not be a good reason to walk away, just a way to get the price dropped down to something a little more reasonable.

There are plenty of places to look when you are shopping for cheap mountain bikes. You can find them in your local newspaper or online. There is a magazine dedicated to selling new and used mountain bikes called Mountain Bike Trader that can help you find some really good deals on top name mountain bikes. One thing to remember is that when you buy a used mountain bike all sales are final so make sure you are going to be happy with what you are buying.
